Daily Writing Prompt #9: Duck Master

Here we go with day nine of my writing prompt series, where I suggest a scenario (often with a bit of scifi or fantasy flavor) and anyone who sees it is free to brainstorm around it and write a scene or story.

Prompt #9: Duck Master  This is one of the uncommon ones I’ll post that doesn’t have to have a speculative fiction angle on it.  The world is full of strange professions that you don’t often think about.  Most people’s characters wind up working an average job (like retail) or a noble difficult one (like a doctor, scientist, or elite soldier).

In reality there is a position called duck master, held by one person at a time who works at the Peabody Hotel.  Their job is to march the trained ducks that act as the hotel’s mascots into and out of their private elevator each day so they can swim in the lobby’s fountain.  There is much ceremony to this and it draws a large crowd.

With the position of duck master in mind, the challenge is to make up a strange or extremely specialized profession for one of your characters to have.  After that you can build a scene or a story that could only be done with them and their daily life in mind.

Good luck and, as always, feel free to comment or discuss the prompt or offer direction to a story it inspired.
