Mysterious Americana Catalog: ‘Dust Pail’

M-A-C (21): ‘Dust Pail’

Category: whatsit

Collection Date: (REDACTED), 1980

Collection Location: (REDACTED), Missouri

Collection Report: Self-proclaimed ‘cityfolk’ (REDACTED) and (REDACTED) entered the dilapidated barn on the rural property they had just purchased, finding nothing unexpected. While cleaning it out a chalky metal milk pail was knocked onto its side.

Minutes later, a dust storm was kicked up outside, growing dangerous quickly, forcing them to shut the barn and shelter in place. The building began to creak and lose sections of wall, which allowed wind and dust to penetrate. A gust sent the pail tumbling and righted it against a trough. The couple observed a complete halt to the inclement weather as a result.

‘That farmhouse has been there since the Dust Bowl’, the wife was quoted, ‘obviously some of it got inside the pail. If you knock it over it spills back out. Simple. Farming’s not as hard as they say it is.’

Current Collector: ‘Sisyphus Philosophizer’, senior rank

Notes from Collector: “Like most of my collection it’s encased in a concrete cube with a ‘this end up’ stamp. It’s not needed; even if you turn it on the wrong side nothing happens because you can’t spill with nowhere to spill to.”

Current Status: active (presumed)
