The twins were named shortly after their birth, but their parents never gave them anything else, abandoning them right after. The names never took. The children were left with swaddling cloths, each of a different color. The boy was Green; the girl was purple. That was how they came to know each other as they grew and realized they lived in one of society’s largest trash bags. A world lies in ruin, its debris drifting on a bottomless sea. Its remaining people, from all places and periods, have one chance of survival. One world will take them, but they must make the journey on their own. Between the two lies the minefield: a vast varied expanse of debris both magical and scientific. Salvation is on the other side.

Three figures emerge from the fog of their sputtering world: BPR-7, Chelsea who must ride, and the red huntress. They see the minefield before them, knowing little, and walk forward. Continue reading →

The ration arrived by drone, dropped in an unlabeled box upon their doorstep. There was a cat door, just wide enough for their arms to fit through, grab the box, and pull the ration inside. Once Jetty had it he slowly walked it away from the dark entrance and into the planetarium. They had a small portable stove set up in there so they could eat under the dim glow of all the fake stars. It was a small pious town on the edge of truly brutal territory. One mile further west and it wouldn’t have stood a chance. They had to stay right where they were; if they’d gone any further they never could’ve accessed the river and dug their own channels and wells. The biggest building by far was the church, though they didn’t make a show of it. There was no stained glass and there was no cross atop it. The cloud bank passed overhead just as a flock of small skates flapped by beneath their boat. Their movement was perfectly matched, as if the fish used the clouds as roaming shade. Little Vince marched through the snow towards their postbox. His mother had scolded him on his way out the door for braving the driving snow and wind. The postman wouldn’t come for three days yet, that was true, but the letter practically burned his hands. He didn’t need a coat, or a scarf, or even mittens because it was so warm.
