Vanaheim – Gods                         Niflheim – Ice                      Muspelheim – Lava

The deep purple of the rent sky went on forever. In that forever, six realms could be seen, each hanging as fruit from the world tree Yggdrasil. There had been nine before, nine for incalculable time, but they were burnt to ash now, and the others soon to follow. It was Ragnarok, the death of the tree, and the movement of all the beings in all the remaining worlds was just the death rattle of life itself. Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: The Stitching Stanzas

Prompt: A poet pixie has to use her writing to save the world, but she only speaks in haiku.

It was the darkest place she’d ever been, and it wasn’t until that point that she truly understood what darkness was. Before, up in the forests, it was just like the weather, coming and going and never taking up all the air. There was always something to break it up: fireflies, the moon, the stars, the distant glow of human villages… Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: Brutal Sacrifice

Prompt: An old but beautiful woman meets the last dragon in a canyon. The dragon moves in to kill her; what stops him?

The canyon was not difficult to find, given the plethora of dragon bones around its edges. None of them were intact; every last skull and wing had been crushed to chips or powder. The mass grave was left, undisturbed, for decades. Even though every part of a dragon was rich in magic, nobody wanted the bone chips, for they feared their use in enchantments posed a risk of bringing the beasts back. Continue reading

Minesweeper Fiction: Session 8

A world lies in ruin, its debris drifting on a bottomless sea. Its remaining people, from all places and periods, have one chance of survival. One world will take them, but they must make the journey on their own. Between the two lies the minefield: a vast varied expanse of debris both magical and scientific. Salvation is on the other side.

Three figures emerge from the fog of their sputtering world: Rowlen the interspecies Olympian, Duid, squid and rival of Rowlen, and the Dying Light. They see the minefield before them, knowing little, and walk forward. Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: Scattered Pointillism

Prompt: A prequel story for Blurry the sketched fat cat (a character from our Minesweeper Fiction activities).

The cathedral was empty, except for Mildred, her canvas, and her paints. She wanted it to be a conversation of sorts, but the painting wasn’t talking. She sat in the darkness for over an hour staring at it, hoping to unravel some of its secrets. The work was a classic; she had to train at the nearby school for five years just to gain access to it. The pumpkin patch, according to the grapevine, was the best place to find one of those odd animals that only come out during a few weeks of the year, when the wind first grows fangs. Orbitia stood in the midst of it, silently, waiting for any sign that one of them was around. Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: Seduction of the Peaches

Prompt: sentient temptress peaches

A troublemaker appeared in the night, their favorite time, and brought only one possession. Alas, it was a thing that hated being possessed, that tried with all its might to escape and spread. The troublemaker had other things on their mind. They didn’t care if the village they passed through suffered, so they shook their grasping possession off their hand and left it upon the fertile soil. Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: Stalagmites

Prompt: A super villain tries to educate her incompetent goons on the basics of villainy.

The Rain of Hatred was a truly ancient event. Any of the books that survived it had scorched covers at the very least. Whatever cruel god had passed over the world, sobbing into his hands, was long gone. Everyone thought the red hot drops of hatred that had fallen were gone as well, absorbed and neutralized by the Earth. Continue reading

Twitch Stream Story: Inoculations

Prompt: A 30-something man, a disappointment to his father, has just graduated nursing school. He goes to meet his father at his golf club to give him the good news.

Simon rolled up his sleeve and checked the injection site: purple and swollen. It was splotchy too. He didn’t suffer those side effects last time. He stopped just outside the golf course’s black iron gates and took a deep breath. It hurt, but it didn’t matter. This was the last round of his treatment. Continue reading
